Old Havana and its Fortifications
Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards.
For the last several years the government of Cuba has been involved in efforts to restore to the historic centre its character of a colonial city, which has been compromised by a rapid urbanization.
In-between municipality between old and modern Havana. It has important avenues like Malecon and Carlos III and famous places sucha as the Chinese Quarter and the Hammel Alley.
The cultural heart of the city, graceful Vedado draws the crowds with its palatial hotels, contemporary art galleries, exciting theater productions and live music concerts, not to mention its glut of restaurants, bar and nightspots.
Gracious Miramar is a leafy neighborhood of broad avenues and weeping laurel trees, where the traffic moves more sedately and diplomats' wives. Many of Havana’s foreign embassies are housed here in old pre-revolution mansions.
