35km - Medium
It is a nice flat cycling ride through the low swampy lands of the Peninsula of Zapata. It is a great area for bird watching and nature lovers. The place is also full of history as being the very spot of the Bay of Pigs attack in 1961.
It is not a difficult road but a bit long with its 60 km and many long straight parts.
Starting point is the nature lodge at the Jaguey Grande intersection of the Autopista Nacional, Batey Don Pedro.
Leaving the hotel, you take right direction of the Australia sugar cane factory. This place was the base for Fidels troops during the Bay of Pigs invasion. This historic sugar factory is closed nowadays but not so late as in the 1990 ies the factory was still working with the old steam locomotives pulling the cane. You can see them in the work shop at your right when you drive by the factory.
Keep cycling the road until it joins the main road into the Zapata nature park to the left. You are now good for 18 km marshlands till the touristy spot La Boca. Here you find a crocodile farm and boats to discover the Treasure Lagoon.
Keep cycling straight another 11 km till Playa Larga. All along the road you see monuments for the heroes who died in the Bay of Pigs battle. Playa Larga is a nice beach frequented a lot by the locals.
Keep following the road as it bends towards the left. The fork to the right goes to the Salinas wild refuge where migratory birds have their breeding places.
The road continues for about 35 km boarding the sea. On the way to your left is the Cave of the Fishes worth a stop. In a natural cave you can see tropical fish swimming in crystal clear waters. The sea is full of great places for diving.
At last you arrive at Playa Giron. Entering the village, turn right to the museum about the great battle here. Next to it is the entry to the 3 stars Playa Giron beach resort.
