Santiago - Chivirico
35km - Heavy
This cycling ride is for the lovers of tropical scenery with the rocky shore line of the south of Cuba and the Sierra Maestra Mountains.
It is a reasonably flat ride of about 70 km but with little shade. Watch out for the sun and bring plenty of water.
In Santiago you can choose the 3 stars San Juan near San Juan hill. This place was the battle field of the Spanish-American War in 1898. You can also take the 5 stars Melia Santiago or the 4 stars Casa Granda.
Follow the signs in the city towards the modern train station. Here you find the historic factories of the Bacardi concern, now in the hands of the Cuban Socialist Government.
Facing the entrance of the train station you take right following the huge boulevard that curves around the bay.
When you arrive at the T-junction, take left and continue cycling circling the bay. You pass by an industrial zone with a lot of factories in very bad shape. These are remnants of the Soviet sponsored industries in this area.
At last you arrive at a more or less straight road that will follow the sea line. Here begins the nice scenery with from time to time small beaches in natural coves. The sea is here very deep due to geological movements millions of years ago.
After quite some time you arrive at the Chivirico town. This is quite low key but it has a great hotel called Los Galeones. At the beach of Chivirico you turn left and start cycling up a very steep hill up to the hotel. It has a charming swimming pool and great views over the surroundings. Even a small private beach is on the premises for those who go down the long stair case.
