Itinerary
This stretch is one of the most beautiful cycling rides one can do in Cuba on bike. It is a 28 km ride through countryside and mountains. It is a bit heavy especially in the hilly curving part towards Viñales. Also many trucks and busses use the same road so be careful. In the first years of the month you can see the tobacco leaves everywhere in the fields.
Starting point is the 2 stars hotel Pinar del Rio. You start cycling along the road in front of the hotel in direction of the centre. At a cross road you see the signs to Viñales pointing to the right. You follow them.
You continue cycling and you cross a bridge with a motor race track on your left. Signs will point Viñales to the left after the hospital. You now are on the road to Viñales. Just keep going while the scenery changes from flat countryside into mountainous pine woods.
After about 22 km from the start you see in a curve signs towards the 3 stars Jasmines hotel to the left. It is worth a stop for refreshments and for the unforgettable view over Viñales valley.
To get to the centre of the village return to the road you took from Pinar del Rio and just continue cycling downhill. Check your breaks beforehand.
On arriving in the centre take right into the village. You see signs pointing towards the 3 stars Ermita hotel. If your hotel is San Vicente continue past the village. In the bend go left following the signs to ‘Cuevas de Viñales’ . About 5 km further you will see the 3 stars Rancho San Vicente to the right.
