Itinerary
The area is called the Sierra del Rosario and is declared a Biosphere of Humanity. It is a mountainous region with lots of tropical vegetation thanks to a reforestation project in the 60ies.
The cycling ride is a bit tough due to the hills but it is quite entertaining thanks to the beautiful surroundings. There is few traffic and lots of shade.
Starting point is the hotel Mokha in Las Terrazas Nature Park. This 4 stars hotel is one of the best ecological hotels of Cuba. They have 27 rooms with nice views over the village and the lake San Juan. To construct the hotel no big trees were cut. They just let them grow through the building.
In the area one can divert to the River San Juan where beautiful waterfalls can give you a refreshing bath. To find them just go cycling down the hill from the hotel along the road. At the fork take right. Continue cycling about 2 km up and down along a narrow path until you arrive at the control post for the waterfalls.
A nice stop would also be the ruins of the French coffee plantation Buenavista. For this go down the hill from the hotel and take left at the fork. You go straight under the buildings, over the bridge of the lake to the main road where you take right. Just continue cycling now a few km till the entrance booth. Here you ask permission to go up to Buenavista which is the road at the left. This is a 2 km heavy climb. If you need to walk it a bit, do not worry. At the ruins there is a great view and in thanks to the reconstructions one has a good idea of how life was in the 19 th century here.
Be careful on the way back as the hill is quite steep.
Arriving at the main road you take right and cycle back in direction of the village. To go to Soroa keep cycling this road ever straight on for about 15 km. It goes very nicely through the woods. When you arrive at the other gate, leave the park and go left. Continue cycling this road for about 10 km and you arrive at Soroa 3 stars hotel to your right.
It is a nice base to walk to view points over the surroundings or to see the Soroa waterfall.
